Selected By / DJ Paulette

In english please.

DJ Paulette : « I hesitated between Gotye ‘Somebody that I used to Know’, Fatboy Slim ‘Weapon of Choice’, Jamiroquai ‘Virtual Insanity’, Madonna ‘Ray of Light’ and Beyoncé ‘Single Ladies / Run the World’ but my heart will always be with the Dafts (Daft Punk), and the incredible Michel Gondry video for ‘Around The World’. This video always feels original, exciting, perfect and timeless to me. Every time I watch it, it gives me goosebumps as I revel in the nostalgia and the happy memories that roll around in my head like a tornado. This record represents the time when house music was really new, shiny, bright, lively and the most fun you can imagine. It has everything a short clip should have, action, dance, rich, deep colouring, fluidity of movement and it transmits a musical and psychological message on so many levels. On the surface it’s bizarre, underground, simple even throwaway – it’s based around a simple loop, and starts with a sound that seems to be coming from outside the club which follows the people into the club and onto the dancefloor. There – wow – what are these freaks doing? The robots, the swimmers, the basketball players / tall athletes, the mummies, the skeletons – all dancing on a stage that revolves and spins them round like a record? Each character represents an instrument in the loop – bass, piano, guitar, percussion, vocodered voice – and follows its own choreography in its own area without disturbing the others. Slowly but surely and with the swell and crescendo of the loop, the groups mix and the choreography becomes more inclusive. The dancers share, exchange and transform their choreography right up until the Busby Berkley-esque grande finale when everyone is in sync. It’s 15 years old this month but it will always stay as fresh in my head like I had never seen it before. To watch and rewatch without stopping and on a loop. »
